Community Based

Napo Wildlife Center

The Napo Wildlife Center  is located on the banks of the Anangucocha Lake, within the unique and ancestral territory of the Kitchwa Anangu local Community, in the heart of the Yasuni National Park.In the early 90’ members of the Kitchwa Anangu community envisioned building a lodge that could attract tourists from all parts of the World. This project would be an opportunity to provide jobs for the community and to protect their land and its wildlife. Back then, they built with great effort 4 cabins and a large main house for the dining room and the kitchen.

Sani Lodge

Many years ago founders of our comuna discovered a tree on a river island, the leaves of this tree when crushed and boiled produced a burgandy liquid that could be used to dye string bags and clothes. The tree is called Sani (purple in Kichwa). Later the lodge became Sani Lodge and our logo is the Sani Garza or Roseatte Spoonbill. Kichwa is the language spoken by the local members of the Sani Isla Comuna, as well as Spanish. Kichwa has also become known as an indigenous ethnic group, and is a composite of various other indigenous groups. There are over 400 members of the comuna who make their living by subsistence agriculture and hunting as well as working for Sani Lodge and other lodges in the area. They lived for many years in the Amazon Jungle an along the banks of the Rio Napo, accumulating experience and knowledge in forest living. They have an incredible knowledge of medicine plants, trees and lianas as well as wild life in the forest.

Shiripuno Lodge

Shiripuno Amazon Lodge is located in the Pastaza and Orellana provinces, 75 km south from Coca on the Auca Road to the Shiripuno River.
The Shiripuno River is located in the area just south of Yasuni National Park. The river formerly belonged to the national park, but later became part of the Huaorani Reserve. This protected territory, where human impact remains minimal, enjoys the same biodiversity as the national park. Visitors can observe firsthand an abundance of spectacular flora and fauna. Yasuni National Park is a territory of the Huaorani people, and lies on 9,820 square kilometres between the Napo and Curaray rivers in Napo and Pastaza provinces in Amazonian Ecuador, around 250 km from Quito. The park was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1989.

Yasuní Kichwa Ecolodge

Tourists at Yasuní Kichwa Ecolodge would have a chance of meeting community members and could visit them, but the experience truly centered on creating an environment secluded from the human realm and immersed in the spectacular natural setting that thrives at Yasuní National Park. As the need of diversifying visitors’ experiences grew, the community at Añangu developed the idea of creating an opportunity for tourists to stay at the community and share and partake in Amazonian life and culture. Thanks to successful administration on behalf of the community, the Yasuní Kichwa Eco Lodge project was thus born and built.
